Web Browsers

Rate this Entry
I confess to getting irritated with web browsers these days. I thought there were standards that each should apply so that we can just browse the web.

I find that something viewed in IE seems fine but when viewed with Firefox or Chrome the page doesn't display correctly.

Recently Steve added an option to our Community and I couldn't click on the link. I was using Chrome and so I switched to IE and the link worked just fine.

I've also been working on a new toolbar application for my ElectricScotland.com web site and found that while Firefox and Chrome users could see it just fine all IE users could see was a lot of garbage. To fix that problem I had to add a line of code to every page of the site.

Al, i have found the same thing with certain web pages using different Web Browsers. In my opinion there should be one set of standards each browser uses, then MS, Firefox or Google can add their preferred add-on`s to suit whatever they think will give them an edge over the others.
Personally, i don't like IE simply because they changed the layout for the different buttons. I only ever tried Chrome once, when it was in it's infancy. Firefox does what i want at home, although i find it has at times been slow to load pages.
At work i use IE only because one particular page i need to go to regularly shows certain info i need, but Firefox doesn't..

I certainly agree with you Euan that core standards should be in all browsers and then let each add whatever they want that makes them different. Links not working in one but working in others and text showing up different in one but not the others are all core standards that should be in all browsers. I also note a lot of discussions about certain features or lack thereof taking place but the authors of the program just seem to ignore these discussions and go on their own way seemingly oblivious to the real world.
