  2. Re: What is happening in this wee part of Africa?

LOL! :laugh2: We get lots of lorikeets here and John feeds them. Thinking that bread & biscuits couldn't be good for them I looked for some proper lorikeet feed in the supermarket and found this...

    Re: WORLD'S OLDEST SCOT

Alastair is right. At one point of my life I used to have to spell my whole name & address :-) I used to be Elda Mulrine who lived Claypotts Road, Ruchazie. It was a nightmare and only the...

    Re: WORLD'S OLDEST SCOT

That must have been a pain in the neck Alastair. Probably how all the mispellings took place during the early years when a lot of the migrants couldn't read nor write.

    Re: WORLD'S OLDEST SCOT

I read it somewhere too. It must have been common for someone named Jane to be called Jeannie. My grandmother was Jane but called Jeannie. I wasn't even aware of that until I found her marriage...

    Re: Newsletter 20th June 2014

Alastair, I think that most people's insulin levels vary daily, depending on what they've eaten or drunk but we never know because we've had no reason to test it. My grandson's partner is expecting...

Wow Alastair!!!! Have you really lost that much weight? I don't think it will do you any harm, that's for sure. I have known people who came off their insulin and blood pressure meds after losing...

    Re: Call The Midwife.

It's a great show. We just watched the last episode of the latest series last week. I lived in Scotland, of course, but I remember the midwives coming to deliver my younger siblings. I'm the...

Re: Ian Rankin Interview with Waterstones

Joan, if you like Ian Rankin then you'll probably like some of the books by Campbell Armstrong with stories based in Glasgow. I can't recall the name of any at the moment but he did write a series...
  11. Re: Vanadium: The metal that may soon be powering your neighbourhood

Yes, I did read that Ranald. I wonder if that's what planes black boxes are made from. I've heard people say that if they can recover the black boxes undamaged, why don't they make the whole plane...
  12. Re: A Point of View: What happens when a library falls silent

It's a sign of the times Ranald. More and more is being read online. I have an e-book and I download books free of charge from my local library. I read too many and could not possibly afford to...
  13. Re: Vanadium: The metal that may soon be powering your neighbourhood

Interesting Ranald. Wouldn't you think they'd make cars & planes out of it?

Much as I like animals I don't like them sleeping in my bed.

    UKIP

Don't think I like the sound of this United Kingdom Independent Party. Had a quick look at their web page and they sound very right wing to me. Who can tell me a bit about them?

It's shocking and very sad. I hope the reports of the entire library being lost are not true.

Sandy, this is probably about the 3rd time I've said that the SNP will not answer the question as to what will happen after a yes vote. I've asked it of a SNP counciller in this web site.....I think...
  25. Re: Farley Mowat, Canadian writer impassioned about nature, dies at 92

Sandy is right. I knew a Mowat family in Scotland and they pronounced the way Sandy described. Pronounciations and spellings do get mangled over hundreds of years.
