Alastair, I haven't thought to read this poem for over forty years! Thanks for the reminder! Although the brief and accurate bio doesn't mention his time in Canada's Yukon, I'm sure you're aware Service is one of this country's best-loved poets for his poetry from the Klondike gold rush, especially "The Cremation of Sam McGee" (a fellow Scot, albeit via Tenessee) and "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" (a more mysterious Scot, who met his end on a bar room floor). Of course, Service did much more than chronicle the untimely ends of his countrymen and is well worth a read now and then. Thanks again!
