  • Tobar an Dualchais / Kist o Riches

Got in this email which I thought I'd share here...

The launch of the website last December was the culmination of years of work on Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches. The Steering Group and staff are now very keen to ensure that the website remains live and accessible, with new items and features continually added to it and users from all over the world getting the best possible value from the resource. Thanks to funding from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Scottish Government and the University of Edinburgh we have been able to maintain a small core team to work on the website, to seek future opportunities for development and to undertake special projects, some of which are noted below. More funding is required (and we hope to have more news of other funders soon) but we are very grateful to all funders for their support at this stage.

More Recordings Now Online An additional 6,000 recordings have been added to the Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches website, bringing the total to just over 24,000 items. If you haven't been on the website recently, why not visit and see what gems you can unearth.

Belle Stewart sings 'The Berryfields o Blair' in this recording. She composed the song in 1947, inspired by the annual gathering of Travellers from all over Scotland who came to Blairgowrie each summer to pick strawberries and raspberries. Belle was one of the greatest tradition bearers of Scots ballads and folktales and was affectionately known as 'Queen Amang the Heather' after one of the songs with which she was closed associated.

In this recording Donald Sinclair describes how crofters from Tiree would travel to the Ross of Mull to cut peats in June and July. Donald worked as a crofter and shoemaker and served in the Navy during World War II. He had a great interest in the Gaelic oral tradition and a fine repertoire of stories and songs.

Norman MacQueen gives a description of fulmar-hunting on the island of St Kilda each August and how the birds were then prepared for eating. Norman was born on St Kilda and evacuated from the island as a child.

Freins o Kist o Riches/Friends of Tobar an Dualchais Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches has launched a donations scheme to raise funds to enable the remaining 6,000 hours of the School of Scottish Studies and National Trust for Scotland material to be catalogued and added to the website. Items still to be catalogued include songs, folklore, music, poetry and traditions, all of which would enhance the resources already available. All donations are gratefully received and if you are interested in contributing to our work in this way, please e-mail dualchas@smo.uhi.ac.uk for further information about how to do this.

    Tiree Recordings

An Iodhlann, the Tiree Historical Society, has awarded Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches a grant to catalogue the remaining recordings from Tiree, for publication on the website. We are very grateful for this initiative, which means that almost all of the School of Scottish Studies material recorded on Tiree will be available on Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches before the end of the year.

    'Voices of Scotland's Islands' CD

The 'Scotland's Islands' project has awarded Tobar an Dualchais/Kist o Riches a grant to produce a CD of recordings from the website, which will cover as many Scottish islands as possible. We will update you on our progress over the coming months.

    Uist Digitisation Centre (UDC)

As previously reported, the Tobar an Dualchais digitisation centre in South Uist has been developed as a commercial enterprise.

UDC's client list to date includes BBC Maida Vale, National Museums Scotland, Manx National Heritage, Glasgow University and the University of Salford. In addition to these the centre has also done work for small and private collections.

An interesting site Alastair, I had never heard of this lot before. Plenty good stuff and hours of pleasant entertainment for the prospective Gaelic student, listen to songs etc while at the same time getting familiar with pronunciation. It’s getting to the point where I wish there were more hours in the day.
