  • JENNIE MAIR SQUARE DAY

I spent a very enjoyable day today attending the 34th annual Jennie Mair day in the Square in the city of Palmerston North in the North Island. Here every year on the second Saturday of December pipe bands and Highland dancers from all over the country gather to show their skills and compete for trophies. The standard is always very high and I don't envy the judges their job.
This year the G1 Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band achieved a well deserved First Place (again!) Our local G2 Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band were the runners up. The climax of the day is the street parade followed by a massed performance by all the competing bands before the presentations.

Here are the bands which competed this year:

I see the results have now been posted:

No video of this years event available yet of course but here's footage of our local band's performance in last years Jennie Mair:

A great day out! All that's missing now is a haggis supper... :-(

Thanks for this John, I hope Doug sees it just to remind him of visits to Glasgow, to see the bands there.

One of the piping judges appears on the left side of the video and you can watch his left hand playing the tune on his shirt.

      Cheers,

Yes Hugh, I saw that and it shows just how catching these bands can be...

I bet there were also a lot of foot tapping going on as well.
