  • WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA

A most enjoyable excursion over to the Wairarapa yesterday to see some of this air show. Unfortunately, high winds this weekend made it dangerous for most of the vintage aircraft to be flown, but in the following footage of the 2011 event you can see footage of the Fokker Dr.1 Triplane - this was the craft flown by the famous flying ace of WW1, Baron von Richthofen (The Red Baron.) 100 years old and still airworthy!

(Incidentally, one of our blokes is claimed to have made the world's first heavier-than-air machine flight nine months before the Wright brothers - here is a reproduction of his aircraft.

    John,

I did read somewhere recently that a Scot was said to have made that same claim to fame. I'll try to search my aged memory.

I'm not sure if this is the man you're thinking of Gordon, but here is a link:

        John,

That was the one. Thanks for the link [now I will not need memory training]
