  • Community Home Support Assisting People or CHAP for short.

I stumbled upon this program and I must say I was very impressed with the range of services they provide to anyone over 60 years of age. Here is a wee video that explains some of the services they have to offer...

They also have a web site at http://www.caregiverexchange.ca/Serv...hTerms=chatham

I arranged for a visit from them and am going to use their housekeeping services. A person is selected who will come for 3 hours every other week and the cost is around $100 every four weeks.

They also have a meals service and they have around 100 different meals to chose from which are delivered frozen and so when they arrive you just put them in the freezer and take them out when needed. You can heat them in the microwave or the over. The company they use is...

apetito which is a leading supplier of quality frozen food and catering solutions. With over 50 years of specialist knowledge and best practice in our industry, we set ourselves apart with our passion to serve great food every day.

We believe that food should be at its best at the point of service. This means that we invest in continuous innovation to help our customers provide tasty, safe food at every meal. Our strict nutritional standards mean our customers can be sure of a pleasurable eating experience that ultimately delivers real sustenance.

As well as Canada, apetito operates in the UK, France, Germany and The Netherlands.

You can learn more about them at http://www.apetito.ca/

They also provide snow clearance, grass cutting and general yard cleanup. Cost for this service is $16.00 an hour.

And they can arrange to do your grocery shopping for you and prescription pick up as well as offer general consultancy services. They also offer transportation services

Should you have a stroke or other disability they can also offer special care facilities in your own home.

All and all an excellent service.

Well I've signed up for the housekeeping service Ranald and I plan to purchase a few of the meals to see what they are like. The cost is $7.00 per main meal.

We have a similar service in this country - it's called "Meals on Wheels." Shortly after her 90th birthday my mother was approached by a member of Family Services asking if she would be interested in participating in this programme. Her reply: "Yes, certainly. Just tell me how many meals you want me to cook and where you want me to deliver them."
They didn't pursue the matter any further.

My ancient memory had a 'hit'....... 'Meals on Wheels' rang a bell for me.

It was run by the Women's Auxiliary Service (?) during and after WW2, with the same title.

We have that too John, this appears to be an alternative. We in Sarnia also have a volunteer group affectionately called Leo which stands for Lambton (our county) Elderly Outreach which does all kind of odd jobs for $10 an hour. They are usually young retirees who like to keep active.s

            Cheers,

I've created a page for CHAP at http://www.electriccanadian.com/life...chap/index.htm

There is a food service in the UK Ranald and I've added a link to their site on the page.

Ranald & All...We have many services such as these here in my county. We have Meals on Wheels...but seniors don't have to pay much that I know of. Also I used to work years ago for Council on Aging, & I'd clean seniors' abodes (houses, apartments), &/or do personal care, such as bathing them, doing stuff like cutting fingernails, etc. Also washng their clothes, drying & folding. Seniors would "give" about 2 dollars in an envelope, which I'd turn over to my boss/organization. Some gave nothing. But evidently this is one of those that are under the umbrella of federal assistance, or state assistance. I myself don't take any of these services at present time. Although I qualify for the "senior" designation!! Joan

We have meals and wheels service in Chatham as well. I've also just found out that there is another service locally called Spirit Express. It apparently started to deliver beer and spirits from the Beer store and LCBO. However they will now pick up anything for including groceries, dry cleaning, etc. They charge $6.00 and then $3.00 for each additional outlet they have to go to. So if you wanted a case of beer, a loaf of bread and your dry cleaning picked up then that would be $12.00.

They only accept cash in payment which is the only downside as I don't usually keep much cash in hand.
