Ken Hames goes back to frontline for Scots at War
    20 January 2010, 14:09

With 25 years of military experience under his belt, Scots at War presenter Ken Hames is a real-life action man who has served in The Parachute Brigade, the Royal Marines and the Special Air Service.

Ken’s operational experience is vast, ranging from guarding Nazi war criminal Rudolph Hesse in Spandau Prison to the liberation of Port Stanley in the Falklands.

Ken’s got a Scottish background, with father and family from the Isle of Mull, belonging to the Macleans of Duart clan.

Ken’s father was always immensely proud of telling everybody that he was directly descended from Gillean of the Battleaxe, who defeated the Vikings at the Battle of Largs in 1216. Ken’s grandfather and great grandfather both served with The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders regiment.

Following an impressive 25 year military career, Ken has brought a unique slant to the many television documentaries that he has created and presented.

These include the highly acclaimed Ex Forces and Homeless, where Ken spent nights out on the streets talking to ex military personnel; Mission Africa, which saw Ken bring apprentice builders to Kenya to build the first eco-lodge and game reserve, protecting endangered species whilst handing over a sustainable business to the local community; and the award-winning Jungle Janes, in which he aimed to turn a group of British women with no expedition experience into a cohesive team, fit enough to take on the gruelling jungles of Borneo. He was also involved from the earliest of stages in the design and development of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.

However, Ken is perhaps best known for creating and leading expeditions of disabled youngsters for Beyond Boundaries, where he helps to motivate and inspire people into making life changing journeys and achieving the seemingly impossible against all odds.

Out of hours, Ken is an accomplished mountain guide and skier, having represented Great Britain in cross-country skiing. He has also played rugby for the Combined Services, is an expert in survival disciplines in the great outdoors, and a keen amateur opera singer.
