From Edinburgh to Orlando
This may sound a wee bit like my life story, but I'll be brief: after our first holiday to Orlando, my girlfriend and I both wanted to live in the States - it is fairly difficult, unless you know someone with contacts - had no clue, spent a fortune on those how-to-emigrate type books and courses, with no success - after our last holiday, I tore out a few pages from the
yellow pages, and sent off about 200 letters with copies of my cv to job agencies, and got about 6 replies basically saying we'll keep your info on file, and let you know if something suitable comes up, so no joy there - then, out of the blue, a friend of a guy who had a friend that worked at one of the smaller agencies I had contacted, called me and asked if I'd be interested in running the credit/finance side of his small car dealership business! I just about freaked out, he then said he had another friend with a successful company in London, and would I fly down for an interview? I was crazy with excitement, but it was clear to me that the London friend/colleague was basically testing my level of commitment - the London guy then offered me a job in his company which had offices in Nassau, Singapore, Frankfurt and Orlando! Yes, I took the job and they flew me down to London on the Monday, put me in a hotel for the week, then back to Edinburgh on the Friday - did that for 6 months, and all the time I was learning how the company worked, how I could make improvements, and made myself essential to the company, while always annoying everyone about how I wanted a transfer to Orlando - I think they finally transferred me to shut me up! That company is no longer going, but I got what I was looking for, and now work for another company as a Payroll Administrator. The opportunities that were available over here were fantastic, much greater than Edinburgh, and the weather/food/cost of living is great, it's a fab place to bring up your kids - all in all, we are so happy that we managed to get over here and couldn't go back to Edinburgh, except for a vacation. The economy has taken a dive at the moment, jobs are scarce, houses/cars being repossessed etc but we'd rather be struggling over here than in Edinburgh at the moment.
Have a great day, as they say over here (a lot!)
Mac.
("Mac" is the name given to me when I got to Orlando, as my new colleagues got a fright when they saw my name written down! How do you say that? Is it Grimy, Greamy we'll just call you Mac, so everyone knows me as "Mac")
