When I was told my youngest, Robbie is autistic leaning towards Aspergers Syndrome, I felt like my life had just bottomed out for the second time in two years. This was 6 years ago when Robbie was finishing his Nursery Year. We have been going to a specialist ever since. I did not know about Autism or Aspergers therefore I set out to read everything I could get my hands on.

I have found with Robbie, he is very talented with drawing, maths and sciences. His problem, he cannot read or understand emotions in other people. He does not know how to lie, everything to him is black and white.

For me, a person who loves to write and do graphic arts, this was hard to accept. I had to learn so I may understand Robbie. I just had to accept Robbie's vision of the world!

Not to worry..With the correct support from those around him will strengthen his total being. His emotions will be difficult to adjust to but that is an acceptable given. Hone in on his talents of the Math and Sciences, he is a near genius on those.Robert will adjust as he matures, not fully developmentally as we think "Normal" but it is his "Normal". He can go far in his given field and be a successful young man. I like the idea that he cannot tell a lie...that in itself will keep him honest.

I don't know much about autism, but I do know that Robby has the most important factor for his future development; he has a loving family to offer support, encouragement, and self-confidence. Regardless of what you read or are told, he can thrive and beat all the odds! I know, I have.

I went for Robbie's year 5 meeting with all involved. They all agreed, yes Robbie is an Aspie but they want to test him for Gifted and Talented in Maths and Sciences! I was so happy, with tears in my eyes I told the group, 'let's go for it!'

God Really does work in mysterious ways!
