  • Online ad revenue to overtake entire print industry in UK

The UK's growing online advertising market is expected to surpass that of the entire print industry before the end of 2010, according to new predictions from eMarketer.

Internet ad revenue has already outstripped newspaper advertising in the UK, but according to eMarketer's UK Online Advertising Spending, 2009-2014 report, the forecast is gloomier still for the rest of the print industry.

The report predicts internet advertising to reach £3.79 billion in 2010, rising to £4.84 billion by 2014.

paidContent:UK observes that this is compared to previous forecasts of the UK's print industry as a whole made by other analysts - namely MAGNA's recent prediction of £3.78 billion and GroupM's estimate of £3.54b, made in April.

However, it should be noted that both MAGNA and GroupM predicted more conservative estimates for online ad revenue in 2010, at £3.31b and £3.70b respectively.

The UK's online ad market is already surpassing that of other economies. Even though the United States possesses the world's most mature internet advertising market, its online ads still take second place to TV, which continues to be the dominant advertising medium on a global basis - except in the UK, which became the first major economy where online advertising overtook TV spend last September.
