    Electric Scotland News

I thought I'd make a change to our story this week by providing a video entitled "Great Grand Mother" which tells the story of how women lived up to 1916 in Manitoba on the Prairies of Canada.

    --------

Notice that the EU is continuing to purchase lots of oil and gas from Russia which clearly the Ukrainian President is not happy about. See the article below in our news section: "Sanctions are no good while Germany still buys Russian energy"

    --------

I also note the Spectator article about "Nicola Sturgeon’s secret state" which does make you wonder about the honesty of the SNP government.

Scottish News from this weeks newspapers
Note that this is a selection and more can be read in our ScotNews feed on our index page where we list news from the past 1-2 weeks. I am partly doing this to build an archive of modern news from and about Scotland and world news stories that can affect Scotland and as all the newsletters are archived and also indexed on Google and other search engines it becomes a good resource. I might also add that in a number of newspapers you will find many comments which can be just as interesting as the news story itself and of course you can also add your own comments if you wish which I do myself from time to time.

Sanctions are no good while Germany still buys Russian energy
Every euro spent on Russian energy is a euro spent subsidising the murder of Ukrainians. Germany knows this, yet it has calculated that keeping its gas pipes flowing is more important. When Chancellor Scholz arrives in Britain tomorrow, the Prime Minister should call him what he is: Putin's enabler.

    Nicola Sturgeon’s secret state
As Westminster grapples with the P&O scandal, a very different farce over ferries has been playing out in Scotland. In the run-up to the 2014 independence referendum, a Glasgow shipbuilder went bust and was rescued by a Scottish National party adviser. It was later awarded a £97 million government contract to build two ferries. Neither emerged. The cost now stands at £240 million and last month Scots learned that there will be another eight-month delay to the boats. What happened? Why did so much public money change hands? Was the taxpayer swindled?

    Story

    Great Grand Mother

This short film is an ode to the women who settled the Prairies, from the days of early immigration to 1916 - when Manitobans became the first women in Canada to receive the provincial vote - and beyond. Recollections of women are complemented by a series of quotations drawn from letters, diaries, and newspapers of the day, which are spoken over re-enacted scenes and archival photographs.

Weekend is almost here and hope it's a good one for you.

Hi Alastair, in reply to your question about Sunday store closures, I can confirm that Sabbath closures were the law all across Canada from 1906 to 1985 under the provisions of the federal "Lord's Day Act". The Act prohibited most commerce on Sunday tho' certain services like restaurants and gas stations could stay open. The Act was ultimately declared unconstitutional under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by the Supreme Court of Canada. In Saskatchewan where I grew up, stores also closed on Wednesday afternoons to allow for re-stocking, cleaning, etc. but we stayed open late on Saturday nights because that's when the farm families came to town. Pubs and liquor stores also had to close on election days. Very different times!

I found the YouGov article very interesting. Of course the results depend on 'who' are asked the questions, but in my very unscientific experiences the "NO" side still prevails. The SNP does not listen to the general population. The Local Elections that are to be held in May really do not reflect the overall feelings in the country. A factor that has not yet been 'tested' is the impact (if any) that Alex Salmond's lot (Alba) will have in diluting the Nationalist vote. it is the inability of the Unionist parties to agree on one approach that has provided the SNP with its power grabs, so perhaps Alex will be the downfall of the separarists.

The trouble in my opinion is the Green Party but you do have a point on the Alba party... guess we'll see what happens in May.

Hi Al, we have a local Green, the Ginger boy as I call him. IMHO a really dangerous crew who only get into Embra via the crazy voting system in Scotland. They have not actually won a seat and now have 2 members in the Cabinet. Wee NIcky would make a deal with the devil herself to pursue her only real programme. Even worse one of them is a Canadian loony. Wonder how Alba wil do in the local elections. I do not read too much into these May votes but they have become so politicised over recent years. I do think that they should not have any political party biases in them and we should vote for local councillors on who they are and their views on local affairs. I also think that mosr peope hardly nhave a clue who their local councilors are with the all the reorganisation that has taken place over the years, Rambling now, so ...

I do fail to understand why the SNP have such a majority in Scotland given their very clear incompetence in running the country. I have over time asked for someone to write an article on why the SNP is so successful and what they believe independence will dond. As yet I have had no offerings. Did you read the 72 page report by Think Scotland they posted around a year ago? It was all based on SNP Government reports.

  • #5
HI Al, confuse the hell out of me too. Disjointed approach from the "NO" camp does not help. Just Hope Salmond and his cronies manage to dilute the "YES" support. I have not read that report. I would never last 72 pages, I just have to experience their incompetence and arrogance. Wonder how they will do with the Nationalised trains now. I see they are promising to create more tram routes in Embra if they get elected in the Local Elections. Miar money down the drain, so to speak. As my mother used to say "They couldnae run a menage". Of course they are now at l;oggerheads with Westminster about future energy plans. I not too keen in nuclear myself but it appears to me that "Hydro" is not "green" enough either. We had better start 'sealing and whaling' again to get candles and oil (not a serious suggestion~~)
