My take on the Trump Presidency so far.

It's my view that if Donald Trump had imposed a 10% Tariff on all products then America would have done ok. However as he keeps changing his mind about imposing them and changing his mind on the level of tariffs it is making it very difficult for companies both in America and around the world to know what to do.

Also he is right to ask for better contributions on NATO spending from NATO members but he's also attacking all of them on tariffs.

From what I am seeing he's lost the trust of all countries around the world and has forced them all to change the way they deal with the USA.

It takes 10 years to build a new Aluminum pant and it needs a huge amount of power. In Canada we have a huge amount of clean hydro to power such plants so it really makes sense to continue to rely on Canada to supply that.
So from what I am seeing most countries are turning away from America and choosing to work with other countries rather than the USA. This means that America is going to see shortages of critical minerals and other products as well as price increases in most products. I see airlines are starting to switch from Boeing to Airbus and also in defence moving to other suppliers.

In agriculture countries that used to get their crops from the USA are switching to Brazil, Mexico and Canada.
Also the USA seems to be backing Russia which is not good for the world order and is problematic. Given that the USA told Ukraine that if they gave up their nuclear weapons they'd support them and then not doing so is also a problem.

So... from what I can see the USA has lost the trust of the world and so is going to have to go it alone and so we'll have to see how that plays out.

The fact that the USA has actually lost the last three wars in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and Ukraine is showing how to fight with new technology which means that cheap drones can now defeat a country like Russia shows that having a large navy is not going to do much for you.

We're also seeing the Dollar weaken against a basket of currencies and the BRICS nations are expanding meaning the Dollar is under threat of losing its reserve status. Countries around the world have been selling off their Dollar holdings and not buying new Dollar bonds which means that borrowing is going to cost more. I note that one history professor is saying that when you spend more on interest to pay your debts than you do on defence the writing is on the wall.

On tourism I can see a reduction on people visiting America but I also wonder how Americans will be received if they decide to take a foreign holiday?

So... I'm really sorry but I think we're seeing the start of the decline in the American Empire. It's a trust issue really.
I will say that I'm very wary of reading and watching so called press reports on social media so I'm more focused on the persons that report their findings rather than AI generated content.

Feel free to let me have your thoughts on this but on the whole I am not sure how the world is going to move. Does China take over? Will India made a move? Will the EU make a move and how about Africa and the South American countries? And of course will Canada become the new super power?

Scottish News from this weeks newspapers

I am partly doing this to build an archive of modern news from and about Scotland and world news stories that can affect Scotland and as all the newsletters are archived and also indexed on search engines it becomes a good resource. I might also add that in a number of newspapers you will find many comments which can be just as interesting as the news story itself and of course you can also add your own comments if you wish which I do myself from time to time.

Here is what caught my eye this week...

Our indifference towards Africa is a gift to China
Many of today’s exploited child labourers are freelance ‘artisanal miners’ working in Africa. Digging for cobalt, they earn as little as a dollar a day, in dangerous, squalid conditions. China has been tightening its grip on this market, and it's time the West stopped turning a blind eye to this barbaric practice and took action.

Could taxpayer-funded public diners be revived?
Campaigners have called for the return of subsidised civic restaurants which would provide cheap, nutritious meals in a bid to improve the nation's health. Thousands of diners were supported by the government and operated throughout the UK until the 1960s.

    Story

Domestick History 1740 from The Scots Magazine

THE severity of the late storm caused a general stagnation of trade. Many ships were frozen up in harbours, the roads in some parts were very dangerous, and most of the mills having been stopt, occasion’d a great scarcity of meal and flower in some places. Such mills as had a sufficient quantity of water, were obliged to be wrought on the Sabbath-days. Many poor mechanicks, particularly journeymen shoemakers, being uncapable to work, the recruiting Serjeants, like true patriots, taking advantage of every circumstance to serve their King and country, have been very industrious in enlisting them into the marine regiments. Some people have been found starved, and several frozen to death. At London, coals rose to 3l. 10s. per chaldron; and the damage among the shipping between the Medway and London-bridge is computed at 100,000l. Flocks of ducks, pidgeons and coots were found on the ice on the Kent and Essex shores, perish’d with cold or hunger. Vast quantities of fish, especially eels, were found frozen to death on the banks of the Severn, near Thornbury in Gloucestershire, and flocks of crows resorted thither to feed on them. In Suffolk wild-geese and other birds devoured the winter-corn close to the earth for the space of many acres. In Hertfordshire numbers of oaks were riven by the frost, and split into the solid timber as far as a case-knife could be thrust.— At Tanfield coalliery the embers spreading to some straw, the flames catched hold of two casks of oil; this set fire to the coal, which burnt with so much violence, and ratified the air to such a degree, that by a plentiful supply of fresh air from fourteen adjacent pits, that pit was changed into a most terrible vulcano, thundering out eruptions of large and hot cynders to an incredible height and distance. It continued seven hours, but the pits being all ordered to be cover’d at top, to exclude the external air, the flames ceased above, but the fire was not extinguished below.

I've also made available Volume 2 for you to read. Mind that at this date the letter s was substituted for the letter f so a wee bit challenging to read. That said there are many references to matters throughout the world including America so worth a study. In particular, on Page 482 is an account of a riot in Edinburgh on October 27th, 1740 by the order of the Magistrates.

You can download the file from:

Also if you go to our page about the Scots Magazine you can also read The Scots Magazine 1746-03 Volume 8. This issue provides an account of the fighting in Scotland. It is hard to read but if you are into studying the Battle of Culloden then worth the effort.

You can get to our page about them at:
