    Alistair:
I posted information about my blog on the forum. But I thought I'd mention to you. I went to Scotland for 2 weeks 2 years ago and blogged about the whole trip. I posted info about the history of each place we traveled as well as some of my 1600 pictures. If you're interested in seeing them be sure to go to the past blogs area and click on them. There are 28 posts about Scotland and 3 about our time in Ireland as well. http://mymusesmusings.blogspot.com

I received a note from Teangaidh na nGael wanting to know about the rankings (e.g, Peasant, Crofter, etc) and how to upload a picture for an avatar. When I went into the My Profile section I could no longer find the buttons that I remember using to upload a picture.

When you get time could you post in the new member threads to explain the process?
  3. I think I'd tend to do the same as when searching for a clan connection in that I'd visit the native Indian web site and also look for the nearest large town and try contacting the library there.

Hello there Sir, I was wondering if you would know of a book or website that could help me find some information, this is the situation. my mother, Lu Williams, said our DNA matches perfectly with Mourning Dove from the Colville Indian Reservation. I read that story about the Nez Perce Indians and how the Scots were mixed with them. The Nez Perce tribe settled on the same reservation as this Mourning Dove her mother was supposedly 1/2 irish, but records. How do we find information on indians ancester lines? I would appreciate some insight.
    Thank You
    Stephanie
  5. I don't think I've noticed these visitor messages before so sorry if you haven't had a reply. Your likely best to just email me on electricscotland@gmail.com if you're looking for a reply.

I don't go to the US that much. In fact my travelling days are slowing down somewhat. But at least having a Canadian passport will make things easier.

Being a diabetic means I do have to be a bit more organized than usual. They put me on both short acting and long acting insulin due to my easting habits. So I take insulin before each meal which is normally just two meals a day. Then I take the long acting insulin before going to bed. It's just that I have no set times for meals so this way it makes things easier.

Takeaway curries in Scotland were a regular part of my weekly meal plan. There is no Indian curry shop where I live but my local supermarket does do a range of curry sauces so I use them and they are a good substitute.

    Hi Alistair,
I also used a British passport and always got a tough time at the border. The American border services don't like Canadian Citizenship with a British passport. A friend of mine who works for the Canadian border services suggested that I apply for a Nexus Card to eliminate the problem. I applied and received my Nexus Card. Cost $50.00 but well worth it. You can use the Nexus lanes at all crossings which speeds up your clearance and gets you through much quicker. All Canadian Airports are implementing Nexus lanes which means that you get through the airport with minimum delay. It is well worth the cost if you are planning to cross the border frequently.
Hope this might help you with your travels.
    Dave.
PS- I now have a Canadian passport as well.

I wasn't aware you were diabetic. I am also type 2 and have been known since 1992. I am on insulin twice a day and have pretty good control. Some days are better than others. I like ES but it is getting too difficult to navigate and know where I am and if this is the right place to send email to?

Hey Alastair. Not sure if you remember my visit to Grangemouth back in 1998. Indian take away while you showed me the beginnings of ElectricScotland. Its great to see how far its come in all these years. Unfortunately, between work, travel, and other interests, I only get to catch up from time to time.

    Great job.

Web Browsers

by Alastair on 4th August 2010 at 17:52
I confess to getting irritated with web browsers these days. I thought there were standards that each should apply so that we can just browse the web.

I find that something viewed in IE seems fine but when viewed with Firefox or Chrome the page doesn't display correctly.

Recently Steve added an option to our Community and I couldn't click on the link. I was using Chrome and so I switched to IE and the link worked just fine.

I've also been working on

Scottish Tourism

by Alastair on 21st July 2010 at 14:50
To follow up with the Scottish Business post I felt a specific thread might be useful to discuss Scottish Travel and Tourism.

I was speaking with Euan Colville about marketing Scotland and he was saying his hands were tied as he is usually given money to be spent in a particular way. It seems to me that it is pointless to hire someone in that capacity and not let them decide the best way forward for Scottish Tourism.

I would have liked to ask him who these people

Scottish Business

by Alastair on 21st July 2010 at 14:29
I thought it might be interesting to focus on Scottish Business to see if there is anything we might do to help promote them.

My problem is that I have not been able to really discuss things to see how I might help. For example Jim Mather MSP provided email addresses for the top people in Scotland to do with business and enterprise.

I emailed everyone but only got a reply from the Scottish Chamber of Commerce. I replied to that one but never got a reply back. I

G20 Summit

by Alastair on 26th June 2010 at 15:27
The news today is dominated with the G20 summit in Toronto. As seems usual these days there are massive protests and it's clear a hard and significant core of these protesters just want to make trouble.

I was told the security arrangements for this summit will cost over $1 billion.

I think it's time that they held these summits in very remote locations and probably ones that are only accessible by Helicopter. The far north of Canada or Alaska seem to be good places

Has Scotland embraced the web?

by Alastair on 25th June 2010 at 23:44
A little while ago the Google chairman was critical of European web sites in that he thought they were mostly brochure sites.

While most Scottish businesses have their own web sites they don't seem to do much with them.

Electric Scotland is a huge site for people to learn about Scottish history and yet no Scottish business has ever sent us in an article.

It really makes you wonder if having your own web site is just an excuse to not doing anything else
