The National Museum of Scotland has reopened to the public after a three year £47m revamp.

The doors opened at 10am with celebrations starting outside an hour before. An estimated 6000 people gathered on Chambers Street to watch bands and street performers before they streamed inside.

Thousands more arrived during the day, with 10,000 visitors going through the doors by midday.

The listed Victorian building has been returned to its former glory with a huge atrium leading to new public spaces.

Among the exhibits are the cast of a Tyrannosaurus rex’s skeleton, Dolly the sheep, a stuffed giraffe, the first ever colour television and a Maori longboat. Pioneering Scots including John Logie Baird, Sir Alexander Fleming and Jospeh Black are celebrated in the collection.

The director of the museum said that the opening was a “proud moment”.

Dr Gordon Rintoul said: “This is a proud moment in the history of a great museum – the climax of a once-in-a-lifetime transformation through which we have rediscovered our exceptional collections, and breathed new life into a beautiful building.

“The result is a new National Museum of Scotland – a place where the cultures of Scotland and the world meet, and the arts and sciences connect. We look forward to sharing the results with our visitors now and those of many generations to come.”

The building was opened by Prince Albert in 1866 as the Industrial Museum. Inspired by the Crystal Palace in London, it was finally completed in 1888.
